Philadelphia Law Firms: Nationally Competitive

Eight of Philadelphia's largest law firms made it onto a list of the nation's top 100 firms (see story). American Lawyer Magazine said it was one of the best showings by Philadelphia firms in two decades. Three of them, Pepper Hamilton, Cozen O'Connor and Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll, were not on the list in 2003. Others that made the list were Morgan, Lewis & Bockius; Dechert; Duane Morris; Blank Rome L.L.P; and Drinker Biddle & Reath. Thriving law firms bring significant economic benefits to the City and region, in the way of tax revenue and employee and firm spending in the local economy.

I'm surprised that Blank's included within the ranks of Morgan.

The BLS has a similar listing of top law firms at the country - but I think they're rankings are much more comprehensive, factoring in things like # of attorneys.

In whose world does THIS occur? Thriving law firms bring significant economic benefit only to the partners and associates of the firm. Few, if any, of these folks live in the city, so except for a meager amount of wage tax, the alleged benefits of a growing number of such parasitic entities locating in the city is spurious, at best. Such entities take up residence there for one reason - to rake in fat fees doing business with a corrupt city government whose citizens can ill afford to pay them.

Well-written but factually incorrect post. Lots of law firm employees live within City limits. Also, at most law firms, an overwhelming majority of business certainly doesn't come from City (or any other level of government) contracts.
