Philadelphia to Host 2020 Olympics?

An advisory committee has been formed to determine whether the Philadelphia region (including the suburban counties, NJ and DE) has the resources to compete for the games and if so, whether we should pursue them. The committee is collaborating with the Philadelphia Sports Congress, a division of the Convention and Visitors Bureau, and the Pennsylvania Economy League. The William Penn Foundation is providing funding. Joe Torsella – who led the effort to build the City’s spectacular National Constitution Center – is heading up the advisory committee.

I always thought we should do it. I would love to see them put together a bid.

A couple problems: One, NYC prob will not get the 2012 games, but is widely considered to be front runnner for 2016 in that case. And then the games will not come back to the US for a while...

Second, the whole Olympic stadium issue. I dont think the Linc fits the qualifications, thought I could be wrong. And, if it doesnt, can Philly stomach building an entirely new stadium for two weeks of use?

But yeah, we should be thinking about it. It would be awesome. So much history, so many other venues close by...

Joe Torsella ran a diasterous campaign for Congress and he LOST. Why did they Choose a LOSER to try to win the Olympics for Philadelphia?

For a first time runner, Torsella did not bad. He did a great job of the NCC and im positive he can pull off the Olympics.

I'd hardly call his congressional run "disastrous." He's a very talented, intelligent man with a lot of drive and vision. I think he's an excellent choice to head such a committee.
